13 Years Later

It was just a bit over 13 years ago that the Las Conchas wildfire roared through the Jemez. The devastation was extensive and I was heartbroken. I took numerous photos as soon as I could get up there that year, aware that I wanted to document the destruction in some way.

I was in the Jemez a couple of weeks ago and remembered the photo I’d taken of a fire truck in a private East Fork meadow, very close to where the fire had reportedly begun. The regrowth in the area has been amazing, and this summer has been unusually wet (and, therefore, green). I took another photo from close to the vantage point of the original to show Mother Nature’s incredible resilience.
